In Pakistan and many other developing countries, the advancement in technology offers services only in big cities across the country.
While most of the population of such countries is based in villages, towns and countryside. Almost 70% in Pakistan's case.
But living in villages, towns and countryside doesn't mean that those people are not aware of technology, they want to use the same services as their other country fellows living in big cities, and they have the right to do so. But government and service providers don't focus their attention to the aspect that 70% of population can't go to big cities for using their services and then go back to their place. The only choice for this major portion of population is to permanently settle in the cities and leave their hometowns which is never easy, causes rapid and unplanned growth of cities, causing social problems.
One particualr problem which we want to address by means of this blog is the provision of high speed internet in villages and countryside. Mostly, villages and small towns don't have DSL lines for the high speed internet. The only option available is WLL which is no better than a 19th century dial-up internet.
But now advancement in Wireless technology has solved somewhat problem in this regard.
If a DSL line or EVDO coverage is present around you in a line of sight circle of up to 25KM, you can bring that internet to your home wireless, in a cost effective way, even for individual use. (technology for transferring internet from more than 25KM is of course present but is not as cost effective and needs a more business inclined investor rather than one two people). Some companies offer to setup a Wireless ISP for you, but that too is for business purposes and needs a large amount of investment. My focus here is indivdual users or a small group of users who want to setup for their personal use or to provide service to a small group of people in their place.
I personally have set up such a service and providing a relatively good speed internet to some of my village fellows. I've brought internet from a DSL which is located about 10KM from my village. It's been quite a decent time that it is running successfully.
